A Great Book with Barack Obama

Linked at the bottom of this post, Audible is publishing a Podcast? Audible Book? I’m not sure exactly which, on September 24. There are 6 episodes, each one covering a book that he found life-changing, with guests who have yet to be announced.

The list:

  • The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
  • Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison
  • All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy
  • Gilead by Marilynn Robinson
  • All the King’s Men by Robert Penn Warren
  • Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by John le Carre

I read a lot, but my preference is escape fiction with happy endings. There’s enough sadness and badness in real life, I don’t need to wallow in it ALL the time. I do read a lot of non-fiction. Except for the first selection being non-fiction, none of the above fit my preferences. I believe it’s possible I read All the King’s Men and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy a long time ago, but I know I started and couldn’t finish Gilead. I’ve not read any of the others. So I’ve decided expand my horizons. I’ve begun reading the James Baldwin autobiographical essay, and I’ll admit I’m pretty disturbed. Which is fine, I expect to learn and grow through the process; learning and growing is often painful. Should be interesting.

I’ve been having trouble finding copies of everything. I don’t want to purchase them if I don’t have to, so I’m searching my library’s resources. I’ve got the first 2, I’d like to have read most of them by the time it drops on September 24.
