What The Holy Spirit Does

By mosessister, October 28, 2018

This morning the daily Scripture reading was Luke 16-17.  Verse 9 caught my eye.

And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.

What?

My study Bible cross-referenced Matt 19:21:

…sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven…

and Luke 12:33:

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

Coincidentally, Matt 6:19-21 was the text of the Word at church last night:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Pastor Gillen had talked about how investing in relationships with people was one way to lay up treasures in heaven, specifically the next gen.

I had been pondering what else it could mean, to lay up treasures in heaven, to extend the teaching, and THIS was my journey this morning. Charity to the poor, social justice *gasp* ARE TREASURES IN HEAVEN. I never even figured out the implications of the verse which caught my eye originally, seemingly advocating the exploitation of material wealth to ensure spiritual gain. That will be for another day’s pondering. Today I am moved to continue my crusade in support of social justice.

This is what the Holy Spirit does.
